Virtualbox
- Resizing virtualbox disk image
Step 1: Increase the size of the drive, for example set the size of my_disk.vdi to 32GB.
VBoxManage modifyhd /home/jim/my_disk.vdi --resize 32768
Step 2: Extend the primary partition to include the new drive space.
- Download the Gparted live cd or what ever partition manager program you wish and mount it to the guests virtual CD and boot the guest and expand the primary partition to use the new space.
- Windows Vista and newer guests can use the Disk Management to expand the primary partition.
- Convert from RAW to VDI
To use it with VirtualBox we need to convert it to the VDI format:
$ VBoxManage convertdd sdb.raw sdb.vdi --format VDI
Convert FROM VDI to the RAW image:
$ VBoxManage clonehd sdb.vdi sdb.raw --format RAW
- RDP to natted VM
Open Virtualbox and in the VM's settings:
- Set the RDP port to anything (it works with 5030)
- Set the network access to NAT
- Go to Network > Advanced > Port redirection, add the following line:
RDP ; TCP ; host's IP ; 5030 ; 10.0.2.15 ; 3389
The host's IP must be the actual host's IP if you want to connect with another computer, or 127.0.0.1 if you want to connect on the host computer.
My VMs all seem to have 10.0.2.15 as IPs, but maybe that's a coincidence. Check that, if it doesn't work.
On the guest OS, check that RDP is enabled: on Win7, right click computer > properties > Remote settings (on the left panel) > Allow connections (I used the "less secure" one)
- To make Virtualbox recognize your USB devices in OpenSUSE, you need to:
- install the VBoxExtension
- add yourself to the video and vboxusers groups
- and also probably do the following change in the startup script (/etc/init.d/vboxdrv).
That script creates /dev/vboxusb if that directory does not exist yet. Unfortunately it uses wrong permissions: 640 is incorrect for the directory, 750 is
correct. Search for 640 and replace it by 750. Then remove that directory and do
sudo /etc/init.d/vboxdrv start
VirtualBox should now be able to access the USB devices again.
